Bright By Three Celebrates 20 Years, Breaks Fundraising Records at Goodnight Moon Gala

BBT Gala-31Bright by Three celebrated its 20th anniversary on November 14th. Over 400 supporters gathered to honor our many accomplishments over the decades.

The Goodnight Moon Gala took place at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ Seawell Ballroom. The event featured the recognition of Drs. Steve Berman and Christopher Ott. Dr. Berman received a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Dr. Ott received a Community Leadership Award.

We didn’t just reflect on memories that night; we made new ones, too. This event was our best-attended yet, and with the help of generous supporters, we surpassed our ambitious fundraising goal.

We hope you can join us next year as we work together to reach out next milestone.

Bright by Text Adds More Parenting Content

Bags Bright Bulletin 6.2015

Bright by Three has added more great content to the Bright by Text system, which now includes 266 text messages delivered over 36 months. That means Bright by Text users receive about two texts per week.

Bright by Text is a tips-by-text program for parents and caregivers of children aged 0-36 months based on Bright by Three’s research-based parenting content.

All the books from our kits are being adapted to text-message format except for the picture and story books. The format of Bright by Text messages includes a 133-character text message and a corresponding landing page with more information.

Here’s an update on the Bright by Text content:

  • Learning Games: 100 messages over 0-36 months
  • Parent Handbook (health, safety and development): 98 messages over 0-36 months
  • Positive Parenting: 28 messages over 24-36 months
  • Early Oral Health: 40 messages over 0-36 months

Bright by Text Message

Bright by Text contains a total of 266 messages delivered over the first 36 months of a child’s life.

By September, we will complete the conversion of the Language Power book to text message format, adding another 30 messages to the system, delivered during 12-24 months.

Bright by Text is not meant to replace the kits and the visitation program. On the contrary, the ideal is for parents and caregivers to receive the traditional program and Bright by Text messages. This increases the “dosage” of our program information and gives caregivers repeated exposure to our positive parenting messages.

Bright by Three has created many colorful marketing materials to help our partners and volunteers educate parents and caregivers about Bright by Text. Click here for more information.

New data visualization tools available August 2015

Bright by Three will soon have a new resource available for early childhood advocates and supporters, as well as our partners across the state: data visualization tools that will allow for an detailed understanding of  data on parents, caregivers, and children under three in Colorado.

By providing user-friendly data tools that allow stakeholders to see and understand data, we hope to provide a vehicle for prioritizing infants and toddlers at the state, regional, and community level. According to ZERO TO THREE’s 2015 Colorado State Baby Facts, a significant percentage of infants and toddlers in Colorado live in low-income families. Of these, 26% live in a single parent home.

Bright by Three’s new tools will take this type of data and information a step further, by allowing you to pinpoint where infants and toddlers with risk factors are located and see a picture of where the greatest need lies. Risk factors include race, income, education level, language spoken at home, and parent marital status:

risk factors

In addition, partners and stakeholders will be able to see how many visits and other engagements are being conducted with parents and caregivers in their area. This type of data allows us to see how many individuals are receiving resources and tools to support their child’s healthy development through a visit, a text, an email, or another method:

Data will be updated in real time using Tableau software, making this an ongoing useful resource. The new tools will be available in August 2015 – stay tuned for updates. For questions or feedback on what type of early childhood data would be helpful for you, please contact Molly Brooks, Data & Design Specialist, at molly@bb3.org.

Bright by Three partners with Mi Casa Resource Center

Mi Casa Photo Bright Buzz 07-2015Bright by Three is excited to announce an innovative partnership with Denver-based nonprofit Mi Casa Resource Center, through their Customer Service career training program. Mi Casa offers training programs for individuals interested in updating their skills and launching careers in growth industries. Participants in their six-week Customer Service program will receive hands-on job training through Bright by Three’s Call Center beginning in August 2015.

Volunteers in Bright by Three’s Call Center enter data from enrollment forms and make calls to families for feedback on our programs and to help get them signed up for visits. The work of these volunteers is essential to helping us understand our impact across the state of Colorado. Mi Casa participants will provide Bright by Three with ongoing support in completing data entry and making calls, while simultaneously learning valuable skills that will help them launch a career in the customer service field.

“We are excited to be building our partnership with Bright by Three, as I think we can develop a powerful model for intensive training combined with on-site skills building for our participants,” says Anne Volcker, Employer Engagement Specialist at Mi Casa. “There is so much potential to create something really innovative – it’s quite exciting!”

Mi Casa participants attend Customer Service training courses at Mi Casa’s location in central Denver Monday through Friday. The group will be setting aside time during their six-week program to come to Bright by Three’s office on the Clayton Early Learning campus. Each day will have a different focus, including a volunteer orientation, a time to learn about Bright by Three’s mission and work in communities across Colorado, skill building in data entry, and call center experience. Approximately 10-15 individuals participate in Mi Casa’s Customer Service training program every six weeks.

Bright by Text chosen as Innovate for Good winner

Innovate Photo Bright Buzz 07-2015Bright by Three was honored to be selected by the Rose Community Foundation as a winner of their Innovate for Good contest for our Bright by Text program, along with eight other amazing and innovative projects making Denver a better place to live this year.

The Foundation asked the question, “What new and innovative idea would you bring to life to make the Greater Denver community a better place to live?” Over 400 submissions were narrowed down with the help of 130 community members based on the ideas’ innovation, creativity, feasibility, and ability to make a measurable difference within one year. Bright by Three and the eight other project winners were honored on June 18, 2015 at the Rose Community Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Celebration.

Governor John Hickenlooper and Sheila Bugdanowitz, president and CEO of the Rose Community Foundation, addressed the audience and shared the story of Rose working in the Denver community for 20 years. The announcement of the contest winners was made by Anne Trujillo of Channel 7News, with a video shown featuring each contest winner. Watch the video featuring Bright by Text below:

As an Innovate for Good winner, Bright by Three received $28,000 to help with further development of the Bright by Text program. Specifically, these funds will be used to localize early childhood resources, so that text subscribers can receive content relevant to their geographical area, as well as the age of their child. Local messaging may include childcare options, early literacy or storytime programs at local libraries, or health care and referrals that will direct families to nearby resources. In addition, content will inform families about free admission days and children’s events at the various cultural facilities in and around Denver, promote Denver’s Five By Five for Early Head Start families, and distribute health, nutrition, and education guidance. By combining news about free, nearby community resources that support healthy early childhood development with our existing content of learning games and parenting tips, Bright by Text will become an indispensable, highly unique tool for parents and other caregivers.

The goal of Bright by Three’s work and the Bright by Text program is to empower parents and caregivers with the tools they need to support the healthy development of children and prepare them for success in school and beyond. We would like to thank the Rose Community Foundation for selecting Bright by Text as an Innovate for Good winner and allowing us to provide Denver parents and caregivers with this essential support system.

Bright by Text FAQ

FAQ Bright Bulletin 6.2015

What is Bright by Text?
It’s a tips-by-text program for parents and caregivers of children aged 0-36 months.

  • Users receive 1-2 messages per week.
  • Messages are timed to a child’s age and developmental stage.
  • Each message links to a mobile-optimized “landing page” with more information
  • Short modeling videos will be added to the Learning Games campaign

How do families sign up?
It’s free and easy to sign up. Just text the keyword “BRIGHT” to 274448. Or text “BRILLANTE” to 274448 for Spanish-language messages. (Standard text and data fees may apply.)

Where does the content come from?
Bright by Text content is adapted from Bright by Three’s own program information, which we continue to distribute across Colorado in our kits.

What kinds of messages are in the Bright by Text system?
Bright by Three is converting all of our program materials into text-message format: 133-character messages with a corresponding landing page each.

Here is an update on where we are now:

Learning Games
This campaign is complete and was the first to be added to Bright by Text. Just like the books, there are 100 Learning Games text messages in the system. Soon we will add modeling videos to each of the Learning Games landing pages.

Parent Handbooks
This campaign is complete and includes 138 messages delivered over 36 months. We are calling this campaign Health, Safety & Development. Most of the messages in this campaign were adapted directly from our hard-copy materials. 40 of the messages are related to early childhood oral health (these messages are from a partnership with Delta Dental Foundation).

Language Power
We are working on adapting this book to text/landing page format and should be done by the end of July. These are messages for parents/caregivers of children aged 12-24 months.

Power of Positive Parenting
This book, for parents/caregivers of children aged 24-36 months, is nearly adapted for text format and will be added to the system by the end of July.

As of today, there are a total of 238 messages in the Bright by Text system:

  • 100 Learning Games
  • 98 Health, Safety & Development (from parent handbook)
  • 40 Early Oral Health

Are all the messages translated into Spanish?
Not yet. The 100 Learning Games messages are translated, but we are working on catching up with the translation of the other campaigns. We hope to be caught up by the end of August. That means English-speakers get between 1 and 2 messages per week, and Spanish-speakers see between 2 and 3 per month.

What are the future plans for Bright by Text?
Our plan is to open up the platform to partner organizations so that you can share your local information via text message with the families that you serve. If you have local information you want to share with text users in your community, please contact us.

How is Bright by Text being promoted?
As of today, all new kits you order will include a Bright by Text promotional postcard. We are also working to email invitations to parents and caregivers currently enrolled in our program. We also need your help! If you would like tools to promote Bright by Text at your agency please contact us. We can provide posters, postcards, press releases, e-newsletter text, social media graphics — whatever you need.

Bright by Three Partners with PASO Program

PASO Bright Buzz 05-2015 2Bright by Three works with over 700 partner agencies all over the state of Colorado to deliver our kits of evidence-based materials to parents and caregivers of children aged 0-3.

One of our newest partners is the Providers Advancing School Outcomes (PASO) program, which is part of Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition. The new partnership with PASO enables Bright by Three to reach more families of Latino origin in the Aurora, Lafayette, Longmont, and Boulder areas.

PASO’s purpose is to provide professional development in early childhood education to Latino Family, Friend and Neighbor child care providers in order to “promote school readiness for Latino children, birth to 5 years old and to prevent the achievement gap between Latino and non-Latino children before they enter Kindergarten.”

PASO’s Program Trainers, referred to as “Proveedoras” or “Providers,” visit the homes of caregivers to answer questions and discuss how to apply their training to the care and education the caregivers are providing to the children. The goal is to ensure children are cared for in the most nurturing, educational environment possible.

Forty of PASO providers will deliver Bright by Three’s program materials to the families they work with. Bright by Three is thrilled to be working with such an incredible organization that is helping to bridge the achievement gap between Latino and non-Latino children in Colorado.

To learn more about the work PASO is doing in Colorado communities, visit coparentcoalition.org/paso.

If you are interested in becoming a partner agency of Bright by Three, or if you have ideas of potential partners we should approach, please contact Jennifer Cajina-Grigsby at jennifer@bb3.org.
